Cat ladder in the Amersfoort canal: Following this example, Amsterdam now also wants to install rescue ramps for animals in its canals.

Mini-Stairs to Rescue Amsterdam's Cats

Amsterdam is making its famous canals safer. But not for people, for cats. Hundreds of small wooden stairs are being installed along selected canal banks to help animals climb out of the water if they fall in. While cats are good swimmers, they often can't get out of the steep-sided canals on their own. The idea comes from the city of Amersfoort, where these "animal ladders" have already saved many lives. Other small creatures like hedgehogs, mice, and squirrels will also benefit from the ladders.
